WINDOW POP is a festival dedicated to people in the city and public space. We connect sustainable design, architecture, and art right in the center of Brno. The vision is a city that is ecological, inclusive, barrier-free, and with attractive local shops.

Livingroom & chill – Vachova street, Brno

We created a street with calmer traffic as a safe space for families, children, friends and lovers! It's a tactical urbanism project with zero budget based on voluntary work. All the partners (local shops and townhall) invested into certain things according to a new shared vision of better public space. More info here (czech only). Our unique approach to shop window design inspiration. A competition with public voting and a challenge for local shop owners and sustainable design solutions.

CONFERENCE

Networking event dedicated to the practical role of the municipality in city design and maintenance of public space. Outdoor advertising, blue and green infrastructure, city furniture, and more! A little theory with many practical examples of what a politician can achieve in four years.

ART BATTLE

Low-key art battle with topics from public space. The most beautiful art is being dedicated to the ugliest reality of our city. People vote for topics and artists, giving them a visual voice that captures current issues. The winner is sold in an auction and money goes to local eco projects.

TALKS

Public discussion about recent architectural realizations in the city. The hated and beloved reconstructions, urban furniture, and greenery. People can ask questions to all the authors – architects, landscape architects, and designers.

We started as a competition for the best window design. 10 brave local retailers joined forces with 10 designers. They had never met before, had a limited budget, and had one common window installation deadline. Afterwards, there was a public vote and the jury met its decision. This is a record of the last competition (2020). 

During the opening walk, designers presented installations and retailers offered tastings and discounts for all spectators.

JURY: The installation is entirely original, it is obviously a matter of the heart, which met perfectly with the company's particular focus. Nikola uses virtually no text and yet communicates the maximum about the product. It is neither violent nor aggressive, but it engages the viewer - each time it is possible to come across a different story – moving, dramatic, or even comic. The window gave the store a poetic depth that perfectly matched the focus. The installation showed that it is sophisticated, technically and artistically polished, and completely unique. Authenticity and distinctiveness are essential values for design, business, and branding today. For this reason, Nikola won first place in the jury vote.

JURY: The difficult situation of the owner Michaela was transformed into a great conceptual solution. Moving the business is taken as a game and a new chance, not as a complicated and risky move. Final_final managed to record the original brand while helping to create a new one. It's a strong story and a well-rounded concept. The ability to offer a helping hand and set aside their design ambitions was awarded as HONORABLE MENTION.
 
 

The author of the trophy design is NAHAKU studio – the winner of the jury award from the previous year.

COMPETITION 2023

The project started in Brno in 2019 as an idea of Veronika Rút Fullerová (graphic designer) and Alexandra Georgescu (architect). The Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine canceled the events of 2021 and 2022. This year, the competition comes back as a festival dedicated to people in the city and public space.

The festival is organized by non-profit Naše kultivovaná města, z.s.
